The sudden demise of former Mr. Olympia Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay at the 2022 Olympia was a surprise. The 2023 Arnold Classic, which had a similar result to the current Olympia, raised many questions. Big Ramy put an end to all speculations by withdrawing from the 2023 Olympia.
Big Ramy, an Egyptian IFBB Pro Bodybuilder, is known for having massive quads and muscle definition. The 2020 Mr. Olympia was dethroned by Brandon Curry after he climbed to the top of the highest mountain in professional bodybuilding. He defended his top position at the 2020 Olympia, but many in the bodybuilding world felt that he had left “a lot of open doors” for rising competitors to take advantage of.
Big Ramy dropped to fifth place in 2022 Olympia. It was the biggest fall in Olympia history. Ramy’s flat body was attributed to a variety of reasons, including a misguided preparation and excessive use of diuretics.
Former Mr. Olympia O’Brien promised to correct the problems and reclaim the title. The former Mr. Olympia entered the 2023 Arnold Classic as a shock but was only able to finish fourth. At this stage, the calls for his retirement became louder and experts said that the Egyptian bodybuilder would never win Mr. Olympia again. Big Ramy, however, continued to compete and work very hard. He has since changed his mind, and is now focusing his energy on fixing his physique.
Big Ramy announces his decision to withdraw from the 2023 Olympia
Big Ramy and Siddique Faooqui from RX Muscle had a chat during the Dubai Pro 2023. Ramy was asked about the plan for the future, given the results of the 2022 Olympian and 2023 Arnold Classic. Ramy revealed:
I have to learn to recognize when it is the right time to perform and when to take a break. This year, I need to take a little break and bring back a new version of me. Olympia, I believe, is the nearest show. “I’m not going in Olympia this year.”
Then he added:
This is not making many Middle Easterners happy. Ramy is my best Ramy, but I’m not going to Olympia in this year. We discussed it with my team and we decided that the most important thing for us to do now is to look forward. “Yeah, we are thinking about next season.”
Big Ramy is the only Olympian to have not missed a weekend since 2013. The Mr Olympia 2023 Live Weekend will also see him in attendance, but not as a competitor.
He is aware that the top men in Men’s Open will have a difficult time winning the event. Ramy did not predict the result of the Olympia in 2023, but he wished all competitors the best.
